William Robertson Smith (1846-1894) war ein eifriger Verfechter der aufkommenden 'Höheren Kritik', wie sie beim Studium des Alten Testaments angewandt wurde, Herausgeber der Encyclopaedia Britannica und Professor für Arabisch an der Universität Cambridge. Heute gilt er als Pionier sowohl in der Sozialanthropologie als auch der vergleichenden Religionswissenschaft, womit er das Denken J.G. Frazers, Emile Durkheims und Sigmund Freuds entscheidend beeinflusst hat. In der ausführlichen Biographie William Robertson Smiths verwendet Bernhard Maier bislang unbekanntes Material, das von der Familie Smith aufbewahrt wurde. Er stützt sich auf eine große Auswahl an Korrespondenz zwischen Smith und so bedeutenden Wissenschaftlern wie Albrecht Ritschl, Paul de Lagarde, Julius Wellhausen, Abraham Kuenen und Theodor Nöldeke. Maier verwendet einen interdisziplinären Ansatz und definiert die Stellung dieses gelehrten Wissenschaftlers im Kontext des freikirchlichen Calvinismus, der schottischen Aufklärung und der deutschen Protestantischen Theologie des 19. Jahrhunderts.
