Seit dreißig Jahren preisen Modelltheoretiker wie Robert Axelrod und David Gauthier das so genannte Gefangenendilemma als den Lösungsschlüssel für die sozialen und politischen Probleme dieser Welt. Deutsche Ökonomen haben diese Idee zu einer allgemeinen "Ethik der Zukunft" ausgebaut. Deren Aufgabe ist nicht, den Egoismus zu überwinden, sondern ihm innerhalb geeigneter Rahmenbedingungen freien Lauf zu lassen. Mit dem Egoismus als Triebkraft glauben die Ökonomen überdies gefunden zu haben, was Kant und Schopenhauer den "Stein der Weisen" genannt hatten: die Lösung des Durchsetzungsproblems, dieses größten aller ethischen Probleme. Hans-Joachim Niemann analysiert die "heimliche Moral des Vorteilsdenkens" und deren modelltheoretische Begründung. Er demontiert den ökonomistischen Glauben an Modelle und zeigt: Wer seine Modelle nicht durchschaut oder die Komplexität des sozialen Lebens unterschätzt, läuft Gefahr, hochentwickeltes, bewährtes soziales Denken durch binäre Anreiz- und Drohungsstrukturen zu ersetzen und damit zu zerstören. Diese Zukunftsethik würde Menschen zu Verhaltenstieren degradieren und sie einem Überwachungsstaat ausliefern. Statt für eine solche "Ethik der Zukunft" plädiert der Autor für die auf Tradition und Aufklärung gründende, tatsächlich gelebte "säkulare Moral". Wenn es gelingt, diese zu analysieren und zu formulieren, wird sie kritisierbar und damit verbesserbar. Als theoretisches Instrument für dieses Vorhaben bietet sich die Problemlösungsethik an, die auf den kritischen Rationalismus von Karl Popper und Hans Albert zurückgeht.
