Während einige darin ein umweltrechtliches Prinzip erblicken, stellen andere auf konkretisierende Nachhaltigkeitsprinzipien ab oder betonen den Ausgleich ökonomischer, ökologischer und sozialer Belange. Für viele schließt die Beliebigkeit des Nachhaltigkeitsbegriffs eine rechtliche Bedeutung grundsätzlich aus. Das Buch setzt sich kritisch mit der rechtlichen Rezeption des Konzepts der Nachhaltigen Entwicklung auseinander. Es erschließt das praktische Anliegen des Nachhaltigkeitskonzepts im historischen Kontext der Vereinten Nationen und zeigt anhand rechtstheoretischer Kriterien den möglichen Rechtscharakter eines rechtsverbindlichen Nachhaltigkeitsbegriffs auf.
