Am Beispiel des Nürnberger Ratsschreibers Lazarus Spengler (1479-1534) untersucht Berndt Hamm die Zusammenhänge von Humanismus und Reformation, bürgerlicher Religiosität und christlichem Glauben, Bekenntnis und Politik, biblischer Normierung und öffentlicher Rechtsbegründung. In zehn Studien beleuchtet er einerseits Spenglers soziales, kulturelles und reformationsgeschichtliches Umfeld, andererseits seine Person selbst: z.B. als Freund Dürers und Apologeten Luthers, als führenden Advokaten und Gestalter der Reformation auf Reichsebene, als theologisch versierten Repräsentanten des Laienelements in der Reformation, als Drahtzieher einer geheimen Religionspolitik der Stadtschreiber und als Pionier der reformatorischen Bekenntnisbildung. In einer Textbeilage wird erstmals das Spenglersche Familienbüchlein ediert, das von 1468 bis 1570 reicht.

Mitarbeiterin an der Theol. Fakultät der Universität Erlangen und an der Theol. Fakultät der Universität Jena.
