Melanie Köhlmoos erarbeitet die grundlegende 'Textstrategie' des Hiobbuches unter dem Aspekt der Gegenwart Gottes. Ihre Interpretation basiert auf der Interaktion zwischen dem Text, seinen Lesern und anderen Texten. 'Das Auge Gottes' stellt eines der inhaltlichen Grundthemen des Hiobbuches dar. Gott schaut auf die Erde, sieht Hiob und wählt ihn zum Gegenstand des Experiments um Leid und Frömmigkeit. Obwohl Gottes Nähe nach alttestamentlichem Denken eigentlich erstrebenswert ist, besteht Hiobs Leiden darin, von Gott nicht aus den Augen gelassen zu werden. Melanie Köhlmoos erörtert diese Nähe in wechselnden Zuordnungen verschiedener theologischer Aussagen, in denen Gottes 'Sehen' eine gewisse konstante Funktion hat. Sie stellt fest, daß sich der sachliche Gehalt der Hiobdichtung im Konzept des 'Auge Gottes' bündelt. Darüber hinaus ist mit dem 'Auge Gottes' der eher formale Bereich der 'Textstrategie' angesprochen. Die gesamte Hiobdichtung wird aus der Perspektive eines allwissenden Erzählers dargeboten, wobei der Text den Handelnden immer voraus ist. Der Leser wird dabei in die übergeordnete Perspektive einbezogen und weiß wie der Autor selbst mehr als die Akteure. Er blickt gewissermaßen mit dem 'Auge Gottes' auf das Geschehen, das sich im Text vollzieht. Die Rolle des Lesers ist somit die des Mitspielers in der Strategie, wobei allerdings eine Distanzierung des Publikums von den Akteuren der Handlung vorausgesetzt ist. Keine der vorgeführten Personen ist auf Identifikation des Publikums hin angelegt.
