About the Book

With the rapid evolution of precision medicine, there is a growing need for an integrated understanding of molecular pathology in both research and clinical settings. This textbook explores the principles, techniques, and clinical applications of molecular pathology. Covering disease mechanisms, diagnostics, and personalized medicine, it bridges basic science and clinical practice. It is designed as a core textbook for courses such as Molecular Pathology, Molecular Diagnostics, or Genomic Medicine and provides a comprehensive overview of key molecular concepts, diagnostic techniques, and the role of molecular pathology in the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of a wide range of diseases—including cancer, genetic disorders, infectious diseases, and neurodegenerative conditions. It covers essential technologies such as PCR, NGS, and bioinformatics, and explores their application in modern clinical practice. Ethical, legal, and social implications are also discussed, ensuring a well-rounded perspective. By bridging fundamental science with clinical relevance, this volume serves as a valuable resource for graduate and postgraduate students, pathologists, researchers, and healthcare professionals in modern medicineaiming to integrate molecular tools into patient care.

About the Author :

Dr. Sharjeel Chaudhry is a dental surgeon and molecular pathologist affiliated with Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS), Karachi, Pakistan. He completed his Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) from DUHS and is currently pursuing an MPhil in Molecular Pathology at the Dow Diagnostic Research & Reference Laboratory (DDRRL). His primary research interests lie in the molecular mechanisms of disease, with a particular focus on head and neck pathology, including infectious and inflammatory conditions, genetic disorders, degenerative diseases, and oral cancer. He is actively involved in translational research aimed at enhancing diagnostic accuracy and personalizing therapeutic strategies in oral health and systemic diseases. Dr. Chaudhry has authored and co-authored several peer-reviewed publications in reputed journals. He is a member of the European Society of Pathology. Dr. Chaudhry has also presented his research at various national and international scientific forums. Committed to bridging the gap between clinical practice and molecular research, Dr. Chaudhry aims to contribute significantly to the early diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of complex oral and systemic pathologies through molecular-based approaches.

Prof. Dr. Saeed Khan is a distinguished microbiologist and molecular pathologist currently serving as Professor and Head of the Department of Molecular Pathology at Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS), Karachi, Pakistan. He also leads the Provincial Public Health Reference Laboratory, Sindh, and chairs the Institutional Biosafety Committee at DUHS. He holds a Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Karachi and completed his postdoctoral training in Molecular Virology at the University of Washington, Seattle, USA. With over two decades of academic, clinical, and research experience, Prof. Khan is recognized nationally and internationally for his contributions to the fields of virology, infectious diseases, biosafety, and molecular diagnostics. His research primarily focuses on the molecular diagnosis and epidemiology of viral infections, antimicrobial resistance, genetic disorders, and cancer biomarkers. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in international journals and regularly contributes to policy-making and capacity-building initiatives in public health and laboratory medicine. Prof. Khan is the President of the Pakistan Biological Safety Association (PBSA) and the Association for Molecular Pathology Pakistan (AMPP). He also serves as the Country Ambassador for the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) and is an IFBA Certified Biosafety Professional. He has received extensive international training from organizations including ABSA, EBSA, APBSA, CDC, BEP, and ASM.

Dr. Zarmina Ehtesham is a dental surgeon and oral oncology researcher based in Karachi, Pakistan. She earned her Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) from Hamdard University. Currently, she is pursuing an MPhil in Molecular Pathology at the Dow Diagnostic Research & Reference Laboratory (DDRRL), Dow University of Health Sciences. Her research interests span oral medicine, oral mucosal diseases, and oncology, with a particular focus on the molecular basis of head and neck cancers and their clinical manifestations. Dr. Ehtesham has co-authored several peer-reviewed articles on the management of oral mucositis in cancer patients, the coexistence of oral squamous cell carcinoma with oral submucous fibrosis, and the use of photodynamic therapy in oral candidiasis. Through her combined training in clinical dentistry and molecular pathology, Dr. Ehtesham aims to contribute to precision diagnostics, translational oral cancer research, and the integration of molecular tools into routine dental practice. Her vision is to bridge clinical care and research to improve patient outcomes in oral and systemic diseases.
