Der Abstand dieses Meisterwerks der tragischen Muse gegen seine erste Trag die, den Titus Andronicus, ist geradezu unerme lich. Die Quelle Shakespeares f r dieses Hohelied der Liebe" war ein langes Gedicht: Die tragische Geschichte von Romeo und Julia" von Arthur Brooke, dessen Stoff den italienischen Novellen des Luigi da Porto und Bandello entnommen war, die ihrerseits wieder auf lteren Novellisten aufgebaut hatten. Die Trag die spielt gegen Anfang des f nfzehnten Jahrhunderts. Mit diesem St ck er ffnete A. W. von Schlegel im Jahr 1797 sein ber hmtes Uebersetzungswerk. Auf der englischen wie deutschen B hne ist dasselbe gleich heimisch. Sprache, Bau und Oekonomie des St cks sind mustergiltig; h chstens sind ihm in dieser Beziehung Othello und Coriolan zur Seite zu stellen. - Das St ck ward 1626 in Dresden von englischen Kom dianten" in einer allerdings ins Burleske verzerrten Bearbeitung aufgef hrt. Goethe bem chtigte sich sp ter dieses Trauerspiels durch eine im Jahr 1812 in Weimar zur Auff hrung gelangte, dem Standpunkt der heutigen Shakespeareerkenntnis allerdings nicht mehr entsprechende Bearbeitung. - Wie bei Othello, K nig Lear u. s. w. konnte sich die Geschmacksrichtung des vorigen Jahrhunderts nicht mit dem Tod der beiden Liebenden befreunden; erst in unserem Jahrhundert ist der fr hliche Ausgang" endgiltig in den B hnenbearbeitungen dieser Trag die beseitigt worden. In den letzten Jahren gelangt von den Shakespeareschen Trauerspielen Romeo und Julia, nach Othello und Hamlet, in Deutschland am h ufigsten zur Auff hrung. [...]
