Dieser Band widmet sich den rhetorischen Funktionen exemplarischer Kurzerzählungen - Fabel, Gleichnis, historisches Exempel - im Mittelalter. Untersucht wird dabei im engeren Sinn, wie mittelhochdeutsche Kurzerzählungen in verschiedenen Kontexten, etwa Chroniken oder didaktischen Texten, als Argumente fungieren. Aufbauend auf neueren Forschungen zu einer 'Epistemologie des Exemplarischen', zur Topik und Metaphorik werden Kurzerzählungen als überzeugungsfähige narrative Argumente verstanden, die topisches Erfahrungswissen speichern und argumentativ einsetzen können. Auch verschiedene Sammlungen an Kurzerzählungen (wie etwa Ulrich Boners Edelstein) werden auf ihre rhetorischen Inhalte befragt. Gezeigt wird dabei, dass sich exemplarische Kurzerzählungen nicht auf eine - bisher vielfach konstatierte - Funktion der 'Illustration einer Lehre' beschränken lassen, sondern ein weites Reservoir an rhetorischen Schlussfiguren abdecken. Die Arbeit gibt damit wichtige neue Impulse für die Erforschung von Fabel, Gleichnis und Exempel im Mittealter. Sie zeigt, dass der Status exemplarischer Kurzerzählungen im Bereich rhetorischer Multifunktionalität anzusiedeln ist und bietet mit ihrer Bündelung innovativer Theorieansätze neue Wege zur Analyse.

Der vorliegende Band ist einerseits aufgrund seines struktural orientierten Ansatzes durchaus in den Kontext aktueller Forschungs- und Publikationsaktivitäten einzuordnen, geht aber meines Erachtens andererseits nicht zuletzt etwa durch die angesprochenen Synopsen oder auch den angenehmen visuellen Diskurs zu den Bild-Narrativen des Bayeux-Teppichs über eine rein formale Ebene hinaus und erscheint mir daher 'anwendungsoffener'. Die Verbindung von Form und Inhalt der untersuchten Texte wirkt in sich stringent und erschließt manches, was sich ansonsten zumindest in der einen oder anderen Facette nicht erschlossen hätte. Der umfangreiche bibliographische Teil, in dem auf breiter Ebene insbesondere die herangezogenen Primärtexte ausgewiesen sind, ermöglicht es, die vorgeschlagenen Wege selbst zu gehen beziehungsweise zu vertiefen - oder womöglich neue Abzweigungen zu erschließen.
