Die Präexistenz Jesu ist unzweifelhaft einer der markantesten Aspekte im Johannesevangelium. Dennoch fehlt erstaunlicherweise bislang eine eingehende exegetische Untersuchung des Themas. Ungeklärt sind entsprechend Umfang, sprachliche Gestalt und inhaltliche Füllung der johanneischen Präexistenzchristologie. Die Studie basiert auf einer innovativen Definition von Präexistenz, die anhand sprachlicher Merkmale genau sieben Präexistenzstellen identifiziert (1,1f; 1,15.30; 6,62; 8,58; 17,5.24). Diese werden konsequent und umfassend von ihrer erzählerischen Einbettung und Funktion her interpretiert. So wird sichtbar, dass die Präexistenz Jesu ein planvoll integriertes Motiv ist, das auf faszinierende Weise mit der erzählten Zeit interagiert und eine gegenläufige Zeitlinie bildet. Aufgespannt zwischen Prolog und Abschiedsgebet, durchschreitet sie die Zeit zwischen Johannes der Täufer und der Weltschöpfung. Letztere verbindet sich mit dem Kulminationspunkt des Johannesevangeliums, nämlich der "Stunde" Jesu. Diese Stunde, Tod und Auferstehung, steht im Licht der vorweltlichen Liebe Gottes zu Jesus. Damit erweist sich die Präexistenz Jesu als ein Schlüsselmotiv für die johanneische Interpretation des Heilsgeschehens.
