In der deutschen Literatur und Philosophie vom Ende der zwanziger bis in die fünfziger Jahre des 20. Jahrhunderts begegnen immer wieder Bilder und Denkfiguren einer geschichtslosen Existenz. In Abkehr vom modernen Rationalismus, Humanismus und Vitalismus versucht man, "den Menschen" als geistig, geschichtlich und natürlich unbestimmtes Wesen neu zu entwerfen. Dabei wird die in der Weimarer Republik breit diskutierte Kultur- und Wissenskrise nun als Krise des neuzeitlichen Vernunft- und Geschichtsglaubens, ja als Ende des homininen Zeitalters gedeutet. Die vorliegende Studie rekonstruiert erstmals fallstudienartig die Entstehung und Wandlung dieses existenzial-anthropologischen Diskurses. Sie eröffnet dabei zum einen einen neuen Blick auf die literatur- und denkgeschichtlichen Verbindungen zwischen dem Ende der Weimarer Republik und den Anfangsjahren der Bundesrepublik. Zum anderen entwickelt sie einen neuen, wissensgeschichtlichen Interpretationszugang zu Texten bekannter und wenig bekannter Autoren dieser Zeit, darunter Gottfried Benn, Otto Friedrich Bollnow, Arnold Gehlen, Ernst Jünger, Horst Lange, Gerhard Nebel und Egon Vietta.
