About the Book

This volume aims to explain the transfer of molecular data of biotransformation to its application in molecular medicine. Topics covered range from the isolation and transfer of genes into other species as models for studying the molecular origin of certain diseases to the investigation of the molecular mechanism of induction by analyzing the regulation of genes the proteins of which control the metabolism of drugs and their elimination. The knowledge of these processes is of extreme importance for a medicinal application. The heterologous transfer of the renin gene not only enables insight into the molecular basis of the development of hypertension but also opens possibilities for an early diagnosis of this disease and for designing targeted drugs. This is also true of the investigation of mechanisms of induction, which on the one hand is aimed at detecting the molecular reason of drug resistance in chemotherapy and on the other hand leads to a specific regulation of gene activity. These and other aspects of the gene as subject of investigation are discussed by experts active in the field. This volume should be of interest to clinicians and bioscientists working in research laboratories and hospials respectively.

Table of Contents:
Molecular mechanisms of renin expression and regulation - functional relevance for the activity of the renin angiotensin system, M. Paul, D. Ganten; regulation of phenobarbitone-inducible cytochrome P450 gene expression, G. Padmanaban, C.S. Nirodi; molecular mechanisms controlling CYPIA gene expression, R.N. Hines, M.P. Piechocki, P.D. Boncher; the control of P-glycoprotein gene expression, J.A. Endicott, R. Zastawny; clinical aspects of multidrug-resistance and future therapeutic application of the MDRI gene, T. Licht, F. Herrmann; peculiarities of biotransformation in the pre- and postnatal period, T. Schulz, D. Neubert; clinical implications of genetic polymorphisms in human drug metabolism, G. Mikus, H.K. Kroemer, M. Eichelbaum. (Part contents).

About the Author :
Editors' affiliations: Klaus Ruckpaul, born in 1930, and Horst Rein, born in 1932, are professors at the Max Delbrueck Centre for Molecular Medicine in Berlin-Buch. Their field of activity covers studies on enzymes involved in the biotransformation of hormones, medicinal products and in the activation of environmental toxins.
