Volume is indexed by Thomson Reuters CPCI-S (WoS). High performance materials are needed in many thermomechanical applications, such as advanced jet engines or gas turbines, thermal protection of space planes, thermal engineering and nuclear fusion. Ceramic-matrix composites, reinforced with long fibers, are expected to be the most promising candidates for such applications. However, several key problems will have to be solved in the near future. These problems include, above all, the development of a superior thermomechanical performance and oxidation resistance for ceramic fibers and composites, highly efficient protection against corrosion, better fiber/matrix interface design and performance, and cost effective processing.
