Le théâtre est un lieu d'observation, un lieu de projection de l'imaginaire, dans lequel apparaît « l'Autre ». Celui-ci se révèle un objet composite, qui conjugue objectivité et fantasme, illusion et décryptage du réel. Prenant en compte des oeuvres dramatiques de l'Antiquité jusqu'au XXIe siècle, le présent ouvrage propose analyses et réflexions sur la manière dont l'art dramatique s'empare, depuis toujours, de cet imaginaire de l'altérité, selon les codifications et les langages (verbal et/ou scénique) qui lui sont propres. Suivant cela, l'art du spectacle aggrave-t-il les stéréotypes, ou, au contraire, contribue-t-il à les modifier, parfois de façon inattendue, au nom de valeurs plus ou moins explicites ? En mettant à profit des approches relevant des travaux sur l'imagologie et sur les stéréotypes nationaux, des transferts culturels et des études de réception, les différentes contributions qui composent cet ouvrage étudient dans quelle mesure la notion d'altérité varie dès lors que l'on prend en compte une production théâtrale de différentes aires nationales et de diverses époques. Cette production s'avère alors plus ou moins marquée par les codes ou préoccupations identitaires, voire par la reconnaissance des singularités de l'Autre. Celles-ci peuvent être nationales, religieuses ou sociales. L'Autre est aussi représentant de l'Ailleurs. Il peut prendre les traits du voyageur, de l'étranger qui tranche sur les autres personnages par son costume et ses manières, son langage ou ses valeurs. Cette figure souvent dérangeante connaît de multiples incarnations et suscite le mépris ou l'amusement, la fascination ou le rejet.

About the Author :
Catherine Dumas a été professeur dans l'enseignement secondaire avant de devenir maître de conférences en Littératures comparées à l'Université de Lille 3. Son principal domaine de recherches est la littérature baroque européenne, ses travaux portent plus particulièrement sur les relations entre les dramaturgies espagnole et française au XVIIe siècle. Elle collabore à la publication d'oeuvres dramatiques. Karl Zieger est, depuis 2012, professeur de Littérature comparée à l'Université de Lille 3 (après avoir exercé à l'Université de Valenciennes). Ses recherches portent essentiellement sur des questions de réception et de transfert culturel, notamment entre la France et l'Autriche, dans la deuxième moitié du XIXe et la première moitié du XXe siècle. Il a publié récemment: Arthur Schnitzler et la France, 1894-1938: enquête sur une réception.
