Die Entstehung der Avantgarden zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts ist eng mit der Entwicklung der Metropolen Europas und Nordamerikas verknüpft. Paris, Berlin, München, Wien, Zürich, London, Moskau, St. Petersburg und New York - um nur diejenigen zu nennen, die man am ehesten mit avantgardistischen Bewegungen in Verbindung bringt - werden zu wirtschaftlichen, sozialen und kulturellen Zentren, in denen avantgardistische Gruppierungen sich formieren und agieren. Der zweisprachige Band macht sich zum Ziel, die avantgardistischen Metropolen in den ersten Jahrzehnten des 20. Jahrhunderts aus verschiedenen Perspektiven und in unterschiedlichen kulturellen Kontexten in den Blick zu nehmen. Dabei zeigt sich, dass in der Kulturgeschichte der Avantgarden nicht nur die reale Metropole eine eminente Rolle spielt, sondern auch, ja vor allem die mit Idealen und Ideologien aufgeladene imaginierte Metropole, die symbolisch sowohl für Aufbruch wie für Untergang einzustehen hat. La genèse des avant-gardes du début du XXe siècle est liée de façon inextricable au développement des métropoles d'Europe et de l'Amérique du Nord. En effet, les grandes villes telles que Paris, Berlin, Munich, Vienne, Zurich, Londres, Moscou, Saint-Pétersbourg ou New York - pour ne mentionner que celles que l'on associe le plus fréquemment aux avant-gardes - sont autant de centres économiques, sociaux et culturels où les avant-gardes se forment et agissent. Ce volume bilingue se propose d'étudier les métropoles des avant-gardes dans les premières décennies du XXe siècle sous des angles divers et par rapport à des contextes culturels particuliers à chaque pays. On constate alors que ce n'est pas seulement la métropole réelle qui joue un rôle éminent dans l'histoire culturelle des avant-gardes, mais aussi et peut-être surtout la métropole imaginée, chargée d'idéaux et d'idéologies, qui représente symboliquement un nouveau départ vers le meilleur et le pire.

Thomas Hunkeler ist seit 2005 ordentlicher Professor für französische Literaturwissenschaft und Komparatistik an der Universität Freiburg i. Ü. (Schweiz). Er ist der Autor von Echos de l'ego dans l'oeuvre de Samuel Beckett (1997); Le vif du sens. Corps et poésie selon Maurice Scève (2003) und der Herausgeber von Le Drame du regard. Théâtralité de l'oeuvre d'art (2002); Place au public. Les spectateurs du théâtre contemporain (2008). Eine größere Studie zum Thema Avantgarde und Nationalismus ist in Vorbereitung. Edith Anna Kunz ist maître-assistante für Neuere Deutsche Literatur an der Universität Genf. Sie ist die Autorin von Verwandlungen. Zur Poetik des Übergangs in der späten Prosa Friederike Mayröckers (2005) und die Herausgeberin von Kulturwissenschaften. Positionen und Perspektiven (1999); Goethe und die Bibel (2005). Sie hat verschiedene Aufsätze zu Goethe und zur Literatur des 20. Jahrhunderts publiziert. Théâtralité de l'oeuvre d'art (2002); Place au public. Les spectateurs du théâtre contemporain (2008). Il prépare actuellement un livre sur le nationalisme des avant-gardes. Edith Anna Kunz est maître-assistante en littérature allemande moderne à l'Université de Genève. Elle est l'auteur de Verwandlungen.
