About the Book

This book explores how Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) is transforming the future of healthcare by enabling personalized, data-driven treatments tailored to individual patients. From genomics and drug discovery to diagnostics and treatment optimization, this book highlights how AI is not only improving patient outcomes but also reshaping how we understand underlying biology of health and disease at a fundamental level. This book provides a comprehensive look at AI’s role in personalizing medical treatments, improving patient outcomes, and transforming the practice of medicine by making it more data-driven and individualized. Through a combination of case studies, expert insights, and a deep dive into the underlying technologies, chapters explore how AI has been implemented in genomics and precision health settings to date and ways it may be applied in the near future, including for multi-modal diagnostics and translational genomics research, while considering the potential benefits and challenges related to data harmonization and security, workforce, and usefulness for all. The accuracy of, and bias inherent to, AI technologies and their potential impacts on AI applications in genomics-related research and clinical care are also evaluated, along with lessons learned from applications of AI in other fields that may be transferable to genomics and precision health throughout the translational research process. This book is designed for healthcare professionals, researchers, and students eager to understand the dynamic intersection between AI and precision medicine.

About the Author :

Dr. Nalini Raghavachari, is currently a Program Director at the National Institute on Aging (NIA/NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland focusing primarily on the genetics and genomics of exceptional longevity, healthy aging, integrative multi-omic analyses and translational genomics. She has initiated research programs in NIA on transformative AI/ML strategies in big data analyses for target identifications and drug discovery to enhance health and life span. Nalini Raghavachari received her Ph. D in Biochemistry studying lipid metabolism in coronary heart disease and has had her initial post-doctoral training in a Genetic Engineering Laboratory in Las Cruces, NM followed by Baylor College of Medicine and Texas A& M University in the field of genetics and genomics. She then applied her skills in genomics for drug discovery in a startup biopharmaceutical company, Procertus Biopharma to prevent chemotherapy induced alopecia and in Corning Life Technologies for the development of microarray based novel genomic and proteomic tools. She began her NIH career at the Clinical Center in 2003 as the Director of the Sickle Cell Genomics Program in the Critical Care Medicine Department. She then took up a dual appointment with the intramural division of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute in 2005 as director of the Genomics Core Facility and served as an associate investigator in human genetic studies on vascular diseases, including the Framingham Heart Study, to identify disease mechanisms, predictive biomarkers, and therapeutic drug targets. Dr. Raghavachari's research interests center on integrating biochemistry, genetics, genomics, and translational science with innovative computational and AI-driven approaches to advance precision medicine and improve human health.

Zeeshan Ahmed

Dr. Zeeshan Ahmed is currently serving as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Medicine, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and a Core Faculty Member at the Institute for Health, Health Care Policy and Aging Research, Rutgers Health, NJ, USA. He is driven towards the advancements in precision medicine with Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled screening, diagnostics, treatment monitoring, and decision making. Dr. Ahmed received his Ph.D./D.Sc. in Bioinformatics with "Magna Cum Laude" from the University of Wuerzburg Germany. During his post-doctoral research training, he has been affiliated with UMass Chan Medical School, The Jackson Laboratory, and UConn Health. Dr. Ahmed has produced more than 100 peer-reviewed publications as the first/last corresponding author, including articles published in impactful scientific journals, books, conference proceedings, as well as edited many books and journal collections. Furthermore, he has delivered more than 75 talks at national and international events, and received multiple recognitions. Dr. Ahmed's long-term goal is to advance our ability from a "one-size-fits-all" approach to personalized and predictive healthcare, and this book is one of the steppingstones in this direction.
