About the Book

This book offers a thorough introduction to the fundamental theories and engineering applications of supercritical fluid flow and heat transfer, as well as the relevant equipment and power systems. It covers the organizational structure and processes of these systems, design methodologies, and optimization techniques for each component. Additionally, it highlights the latest advancements and key scientific challenges in energy and chemical technologies that leverage CO2 and water to improve efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.

Supercritical CO2 for Comprehensive Energy Systems is an essential resource for students, engineers, and scientists in related fields. It also offers government and business decision-makers innovative energy systems options to help achieve carbon neutrality.

About the Author :

Lin Chen, Ph.D., is a full professor and Director of the Heat and Mass Transfer Research Center at the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and jointly at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, China. He is a board member of the Experts Commission of the China Energy Society. Dr. Chen obtained his B.E and Ph.D. from Peking University. He was previously an Assistant Professor at Tohoku University, Japan. His current research topics include new energy and power engineering, CCUS (geological flow), energy resources (gas hydrate, hydrogen), and supercritical fluids. He has authored over 300 journal papers and/or conference presentations, 20 patents, and five professional books, including Handbook of Research on Advancements in Supercritical Fluids Applications for Sustainable Energy Systems (IGI Global, 2021). He has served as chair or a major organizer 10 times and as a plenary/invited speaker 40 times at international conferences and symposia. He won the Research Paper Award of the Visualization Society of Japan in 2022 and the Chenxuejun Paper Award of the Chinese Society of Engineering Thermophysics in 2024. He is currently an Associate Editor of the ASME Journal of Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science and an Editorial Board member of the Journal of Supercritical Fluids.

Jian Xie, Ph.D., is an associate professor at North China Electric Power University, where he leads a team in advanced power generation system innovation. His research interests include heat transfer in multiphase flows and supercritical fluids, advanced power cycles and low-grade energy utilization, and thermal storage in solar- or coal-fired power plants. He has published over 50 papers in international journals and holds more than 20 granted patents. Dr. Xie received the IAAM Scientist Award from the International Association of Advanced Materials, the Chen Xuejun Outstanding Paper Award for Young Scholars, and sponsorship through the Young Elite Scientists program. He was named an Excellent Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Thermal Science in 2022.

Bo-Feng Bai, Ph.D., is a leading scholar at Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU). He received his B.E. and Ph.D. in Power Engineering & Engineering Thermophysics from Xi'an Jiaotong University in 1993 and 1999, respectively. He holds several prestigious positions, including Vice President of the Chinese Society of Engineering Thermophysics, Chairperson of the Multiphase Flow Committee of China, and Director of the State Key Laboratory of Multiphase Flow in Power Engineering. Prof. Bai serves in editorial roles, including Associate Editor of the Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science and Measurement, and Advisory Board Member of Physics of Fluids. Prof. Bai focuses on the fundamental theories of multiphase flow and heat transfer, and their applications in thermal, power, and petroleum engineering. He has authored over 270 SCI-indexed journal papers and delivered more than 40 keynote speeches.

Hongzhi Li, Ph.D., is the chief expert at Xi'an Thermal Power Research Institute Co., Ltd. He is a Professor at Xi'an Jiaotong University and co-appointed by the Ministry of Education's Yangtze River Scholar program. He is the leader of both the Shaanxi Provincial Science and Technology Innovation Team and the first batch of science and technology innovation teams at China Huaneng Group Co., Ltd. Prof. Li is involved in advanced supercritical-fluid power conversion cycles and energy storage technologies. His contributions have been recognized through over 10 provincial and ministerial-level awards, including the First Prize of the Electric Power Science and Technology Progress Award, China Patent Excellence Award, Second Prize of the Shaanxi Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award, and the Shaanxi Youth Science and Technology Award, among others.
