About the Book

This book discusses the development, scalability, and integration of low and net-zero carbon fuel production for sustainable aviation. It provides key information on the aviation sector's carbon footprint, global targets, and decarbonization methods, including the use of alternative aviation fuels. Coverage includes research and industrial perspectives on the use of various low- and net-zero aviation fuels, as well as the effects of biofuels, synthetic fuels, hydrogen, e-fuels, ammonia, and alcohol-based fuels on aviation performance, cost, and the environment. Low and Net-Zero Carbon Aviation Fuels: Innovations and Pathways to Sustainable Flight is an important reference for academic researchers and industry practitioners, including those working for commercial aircraft manufacturers, airline maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) companies, and airline operators.

Chapter "Towards sustainable aviation: a techno-economic comparison of alternative fuel and propulsion options" is available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License via link.springer.com.

About the Author :

Can Ozgur Colpan, Ph.D., received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Middle East Technical University in 2003 and 2005, respectively. He conducted his Ph.D. studies at the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering of Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada, between 2005 and 2009. He continued his studies as a postdoctoral researcher at the same department between 2009 and 2010 and at the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department of Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada, between 2010 and 2012. He has worked at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Dokuz Eylül University since 2012. In 2014 and 2019, he was appointed Associate Professor and Professor, respectively. Dr. Colpan has conducted research in the fields of fuel cells and hydrogen, as well as in mathematical modeling of integrated energy systems. His areas of research include modeling of direct internal reforming solid oxide fuel cells, material development and mathematical modeling for direct methanol fuel cells, development of high-temperature PEM fuel cells, simulation and optimization of the fuel cell vehicle powertrains, catalytic dehydrogenation of solid hydrogen storage materials, analysis of organic Rankine cycle-based systems, and analysis of biofuel-fueled turbojet. He has worked as chairman, technical chair, and organizing committee member for many conferences. He serves as a Board Member of the Turkish Hydrogen Technology Association and as an Advisory Board Member of the TÜBİTAK Efficiency Challenge. In 2019, he won the Turkish Academy of Sciences Outstanding Young Scientist Award (TUBA-GEBIP) and METU Professor Dr. Mustafa N. Parlar Education and Research Foundation's Research Encouragement Award.

Mustafa Umut Karaoğlan, Ph.D., received his B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from Yildiz Technical University in 2011. He received his M.Sc. degree in electric vehicle design and simulation and his Ph.D. in powertrain simulation for fuel cell vehicles from the Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences of Dokuz Eylül University in 2014 and 2019, respectively. Dr. Karaoğlan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Dokuz Eylül University, where he served as a Research Assistant from 2012 to 2021, and is currently the Vice Director of the Energy Research and Application Center. He has conducted research on electric, hybrid, and fuel-cell powertrain systems and hydrogen-related vehicular applications. His research focuses on modeling powertrain components for electric, hybrid, and fuel cell vehicles, developing battery and fuel cell integration, and simulating and optimizing fuel cell powertrains for air and land vehicles.

Alper Can İnce, Ph.D., received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Dokuz Eylul University in 2017 and 2019, respectively. He earned his doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Connecticut in 2025. His doctoral work centered on the modeling, fabrication, and characterization of advanced structured electrodes to enhance the performance and durability of electrochemical energy devices.

He has conducted research at Los Alamos National Laboratory, contributing to physical modeling and the development of next generation electrode architectures for fuel cells and electrolyzers. His broader work spans energy conversion, thermal fluid sciences, and hydrogen-based systems, including industrial advising on hydrogen integration. He received the National Hydrogen Association's Student Researcher Award in 2023.

He is currently a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Technical University of Denmark, working on process design and optimization for thermochemical heat storage systems. He has received an MSCA PF grant from the EU Commission, placing him among the top 2% of applicants.
