About the Book

This volume presents a curated collection of contributions from the Go20 Conference on Scientific Computing and Software, held May 20–24, 2024, in Gozo, Malta. Go20 is an exclusive, invitation-only event limited to 20 participants, designed to foster deep exchange among leading experts from academia, industry, and the public sector. With no parallel sessions and 45-minute talks by every attendee, the conference offers an intensive forum for sharing cutting-edge research.

All papers included in this proceedings underwent rigorous peer review. The topics reflect the forefront of scientific computing, emphasizing both theoretical advances and their realization in software—bridging abstract algorithms with practical implementation. Areas of focus include:

  • Perturbations and backward error analysis
  • Domain decomposition techniques
  • Superconvergence of non-stiffly accurate implicit Runge–Kutta methods for index-2 DAEs
  • Parallel-in-time spectral deferred correction and collocation methods
  • Computational approaches for physiological dysfunctions and clinical medicine
  • Parameter estimation for multidimensional stochastic differential equations
  • Novel operator-splitting and fractional-step methods for real and complex PDEs

These contributions advance the rapidly evolving field of scientific computing, addressing challenges with profound societal impact—from healthcare and medicine to climate modeling and data-driven decision-making. By highlighting the interplay between theory and software, this book serves as a valuable resource for researchers seeking insight into state-of-the-art methods and their practical applications.

Researchers and practitioners in scientific computing, numerical analysis, and applied mathematics—both academic and non-academic—will find this volume an essential reference for the latest developments in algorithms and software for differential equations and linear systems.

About the Author :

Raymond Spiteri is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Saskatchewan. His areas of research are numerical analysis, scientific computing, and high-performance computing. He specializes in designing efficient time-stepping methods and software for differential equations, especially implicit-explicit and fractional-step operator-splitting methods. He has published over 170 articles in peer-reviewed journals or conference proceedings and has over 6600 citations (Google Scholar). He has co-edited the Springer conference proceedings Mathematical and Computational Approaches in Advancing Modern Science and Engineering (2016) and was principal editor for the book Scientific Computing and Software - Go20 CSCS, Marsalforn, Malta, May 22-26, 2023. Spiteri also serves as associate editor for the journal Applied Numerical Mathematics and co-founded the journal Mathematics in Science and Industry, the flagship journal of the Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematics Society, for which he served as co-Editor-in-Chief for its inaugural five years.

Siqi Wei is a postdoctoral research scientist at the Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) and an instructor in the Department of Mathematics at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. She obtained her Ph.D in Mathematics in 2025 at the University of Saskatchewan under the supervision of Dr. Raymond Spiteri. Her research area includes time-stepping methods and machine learning methods for differential equations. Her expertise lies in the fractional-step operator splitting methods. She has published six articles in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings and has over 30 citations (Google Scholar). She co-organized several mini-symposia at the Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematics Society (CAIMS) annual meetings. Her research at ECCC focuses on developing hybrid (numerical and data-driven) weather forecast models.
