About the Book

The seismic safety of dams is a critical concern worldwide, especially in seismically active regions where aging concrete infrastructure poses serious risks to communities, ecosystems, and economies. In recent years, there has been a growing shift toward Performance-Based Earthquake Engineering (PBEE)—a modern, risk-informed approach that allows for more realistic modeling, damage prediction, and decision-making in infrastructure resilience. Performance-Based Earthquake Engineering of Concrete Dams presents a unified and practical framework for the seismic evaluation and risk assessment of large-scale dam infrastructure. The book integrates classical engineering mechanics with modern computational techniques to assess seismic demands, predict damage states, quantify uncertainty, and support decision-making under risk. It builds upon established PBEE principles and adapts them specifically for the unique challenges of dam-reservoir-foundation systems, including nonlinear response, fluid-structure interaction, and potential failure modes. Structured as a step-by-step technical guide, the book is divided into six major parts covering failure mode identification, seismic hazard analysis, coupled numerical modeling, nonlinear simulations, fragility assessment, and risk-based safety evaluation. It incorporates case studies, regulatory perspectives, and hands-on modeling examples. While designed for practicing engineers and dam safety professionals, the book is equally valuable for graduate students and researchers seeking a clear entry point into seismic dam analysis. The concise format ensures focused, actionable content without unnecessary complexity.

About the Author :
M. Amin Hariri-Ardebili, University of Maryland, College Park, USA. Dr. M. Amin Hariri-Ardebili is a Research Scientist at the University of Maryland and an Associate Researcher at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). His work spans performance-based earthquake engineering, risk and uncertainty analysis, nonlinear modeling of infrastructure, and scientific machine learning. He has authored over 130 peer-reviewed publications and six books, and has led interdisciplinary projects funded by NIST, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (USBR), and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Dr. Hariri-Ardebili has also served as a technical adviser at HDR, overseeing national efforts in the design and analysis of concrete dams and hydraulic structures. He holds leadership roles within USSD committees and international dam-engineering initiatives and is the founding Editor-in-Chief of the Dam Engineering and Design section of Frontiers in Built Environment.   Rocio L. Segura, Polytechnique Montréal, Montréal, Québec, Canada. Dr. Rocio L. Segura is an Assistant Professor in the Group for Research in Structural Engineering (GRS) within the Department of Civil, Geological, and Mining Engineering at Polytechnique Montréal. Her research focuses on the seismic performance and resilience of hydraulic infrastructure systems, with particular emphasis on advanced numerical modeling, structural response assessment, and the integration of Potential Failure Mode Analysis within performance-based engineering frameworks. She has contributed to dam safety and risk assessment studies in both academic and consulting settings, bringing expertise in nonlinear time-history analysis, multi-hazard assessment, fragility modeling, and damage mechanics of concrete structures. Dr. Segura is also actively engaged in educational and outreach initiatives promoting infrastructure equity, community resilience, and broader access to STEM fields for underrepresented groups.   Jerzy W. Salamon, US Bureau of Reclamation, Denver, USA. Dr. Jerzy Salamon is a technical specialist in the Waterways and Concrete Dams Group at the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, involved in structural evaluation, safety, and risk assessment of concrete dams. He plays a key role in the comprehensive and issue evaluations of various dams and their appurtenant structures, supporting the Dam Safety Office programs that inform and enhance regulatory decision-making. Dr. Salamon is a former chair of the U.S. Society on Dams Committee on Concrete Dams and currently serves as the USSD representative to the International Commission on Large Dams Committee on Concrete Dams (ICOLD). He has contributed to several technical bulletins, such as Arch Dam Design, Nonlinear Analysis of Concrete Dams, and Aging Concrete Dams.
