About the Book

This book is a comprehensive guide to the latest research on low-dimensional silicon carbide (SiC) nanostructures, including nanoparticles and quantum dots, diverse morphologies of nanowires, nanotubes, 2D honeycomb-structured monolayers, nanostructured films, and nanocomposites based on both sound experiments and ab initio calculations and simulations. It also covers the significant advances made in the past several decades in the structural, electronic, and optical properties of various polytypes of bulk SiC crystals as well as fruitful photonic applications of SiC.  SiC nanostructures exhibit fascinating and industrially important properties, including diverse and transformable polytypes, complex and intriguing surface structures including fruitful surface color centers across the entire visible spectral region, and excellent biocompatibility. These properties make them ideal for use in nanoelectronics, photonics, electron field emission, sensing, quantum information, green energy conversion and storage, composite nanostructures, biomedical engineering, and medicine. SiC is also an excellent template for epitaxially growing high-quality graphene and other semiconductors.   This second edition of the book is significantly expanded and updated to reflect those newest advances as well as some important correlated points missed in the first edition, emphasizing the strong correlations between structures and properties. Newly incorporated and highly expanded topics include point defects and spin dynamics, impurities and luminescence, origins of presolar SiC grains, unique characteristics of SiC quantum dots, applications of SiC nanowires in microwave absorption and thermal management, two-dimensional SiC honeycomb-structured monolayers, etc. It is an essential and self-contained reference for materials scientists, physicists, chemists, and engineers working in microelectronics, optoelectronics, microengineering, and biomedical engineering. Graduate students and researchers new to the field will also find this book a valuable resource.

Table of Contents:

About the Author :
Prof. Jiyang Fan received his B.Sc. in optics from Shandong University, M.Sc. in theoretical physics from the Institute of Theoretical Physics in the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Ph.D. in condensed matter physics from Nanjing University. His major research interest involves semiconductor nanocrystals focusing on their structural, electronic, and optical properties as well as their applications in optoelectronic devices and biotechnology. Particularly, he and co-authors have made continuous investigations of the SiC nanostructures for two decades and revealed some intriguing optical and surface characteristics of the SiC nanocrystals. He has co-authored more than eighty peer-reviewed journal papers and one monograph. He is a reviewer for over eighty SCI-indexed journals and has been awarded IOP Trusted Reviewer status. He is a fellow of IAAM. He is one of the members of the team who won the 2017 Chinese Ministry of Education Natural Science Award (First Class) for the contributions of the optical spectroscopy of semiconductor nanostructures. Prof. Paul K. Chu received his B.S. in mathematics from the Ohio State University and MS and PhD in chemistry from Cornell University. He is currently a chair professor of Materials Engineering in the Department of Physics, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and Department of Biomedical Engineering in City University of Hong Kong. His research activities are quite diverse, spanning plasma science and engineering, surface science and engineering, functional thin films, biomaterials, and energy materials. He is the co-author of 1 book and co-editor of eight books on ion beam nanofabrication, biomaterials, nanotechnology, plasma science and engineering, and surface modification of materials. He has authored/co-authored more than 40 book chapters, 2,500 papers in international refereed journals, as well as 1,000 international conference papers. He is a fellow of IEEE, APS, MRS, AVS, HKIE, and Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences. He was the recipient of the 2007 IEEE/NPSS Merit Award and a variety of other awards.
