About the Book

This open access book offers a unique and practically oriented study of organisational and national conditions for implementing Responsible Research Innovation (RRI) policies and practices. It gives the reader a thorough understanding of the different aspects of RRI, and of barriers and drivers of implementation of RRI related policies. It shows how different organisational and national contexts provide unique challenges and opportunities for bringing RRI into practice. The book provides concrete examples and offers the reader both a theory-based understanding of the topic, as well as guidance for action. The target audience encompasses, in addition to RRI students and scholars in particular, all students and scholars in the field of Science and Technology Studies (STS). The book is also of interest to students and scholars in the fields of research ethics, philosophy of science, organisational governance in the research system and organisational theory more generally. Finally, thebook is of use to practitioners in research conducting and funding organisations working to implement RRI.

About the Author :
Christian Wittrock is an organizational sociologist in the Innovation and Enterprise Development group at the Work Research Institute, Oslo Metropolitan University, Norway. He studies the intra- and inter organizational diffusion of innovations in and across multiple settings. He is currently also a PhD Fellow at Aarhus University, department of Business Development and Technology, Denmark. Ellen-Marie Forsberg is managing director at NORSUS Norwegian Institute for Sustainability Research. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy with a focus of applied ethics, built up the Oslo Research Group on Responsible Innovation and has led several RRI projects, including the Horizon 2020 RRI-Practice project reported on in this book.  Auke Pols is a lecturer in responsible innovation and the ethics of technology at the Knowledge, Technology and Innovation group at Wageningen University. He has done research on ethical aspects of socio-technical transitions,particularly in the global South. Phil Macnaghten is a Professor in the Knowledge, Technology and Innovation (KTI) group at Wageningen University. He is author of Contested Natures and one of the leading scholars on responsible innovation and the governance of techno-visionary science. His current research focus is on responsible innovation, gene editing and the politics of anticipation. David Ludwig is an assistant professor in the Knowledge, Technology and Innovation (KTI) group at Wageningen University, the Netherlands. His work combines philosophy and social studies of science in addressing epistemological, ontological, political dimensions of science in cross-cultural and global contexts.
