Cinq écritures figuratives font l'objet de ce livre: chinois, naxi, maya, aztè- que et égyptien. Cinq façons de penser le monde, de le mettre en image, de l'écrire. Car, à chaque fois, des signes ont été façonnés pour transmettre une parole, certes, mais surtout un regard. Dans le même temps, ils restèrent des images lisibles et reconnaissables comme telles tout au long de l'histoire de ces civilisations, à l'exception cependant du chinois dont les caractères, à l'origine fortement iconiques, perdirent ensuite leur motivation.
Cette force, cette longévité de l'image au sein du signe n'est pas gratuite: elle n'est ni ornement, ni code arbitraire, mais le miroir unique de la conception du monde qu'avaient les Chinois, les Naxis, les Mayas, les Aztèques et les Égyptiens. Aussi apparaît-elle comme une clé permettant de pénétrer directement dans un univers conceptuel. Encore faut-il admettre que tout signe, même le plus simple en apparence, est le fruit d'une réflexion qui sélectionne certains traits distinctifs et les assemble, fournissant ainsi le «tronc» que le scribe a tout loisir d'enrichir, selon le contexte ou l'époque, de «ramifications». C’est pourquoi nous avons présenté chaque écriture en nous efforçant d'évoquer les signes et leurs variantes, la possibilité de les réduire ou au contraire de créer, par ajout d'autres traits, de nouveaux échos sémantiques avec les signes, les mots environnants, voire le monument sur lequel ils figurent, faisant ainsi état de la richesse et de la liberté de ces écritures figuratives.
