About the Book

Left to Right: The Cultural Shift from Words to Pictures is an in-depth study of the increasingly visual nature of our culture, and the influence that digital technology has had on the way that we communicate. It demonstrates that the development of language has gone hand in hand with the development of technology, discussing the challenge posed to alphabetic information by the rapid development of screen-based media over the latter half of the twentieth century. This title is a detailed discussion of the role design and other creative disciplines have to play for a new image-centric generation.

Review :
[Left to Right] should be on the reading list of all undergraduate graphic design, communication and media students both for the range of ideas it offers for debate as well for it's design and wealth of visual material. This is a graphic designer's dream production - a lavishly illustrated and beautifully produced book which cuts no corners in delivering a luxury product. But it also has a series argument explored in the text. Left to Right is intended for students of communication media and graphic design, but practicing professionals will find it useful, too. Very good - clearly links theory to practice and crosses all the specialisms taught on the course. Clearly written, intelligent and informative. An interesting book for our students ... It challenges the boundaries of what type can be and of course what image can be! Good format as images can be seen at a large scale. The book is contemporary in style with a good use of typography throughout. It is appealing to look at with a good use of white space. A most useful book across all years of the course.
