Basics Illustration 01: Thinking Visually by Mark Wigan features a wide range of work, demonstrating diverse visual languages, context, ideas, techniques and skills. It also looks at the ways in which illustrators develop their own personal visual language. Contemporary illustrators from all over the world engaged in a diverse range of approaches to the discipline have contributed their artwork and commentaries on visual thinking and the working process. The text also features the work of recent graduates, present students and observations from educators past and present.

About the Author :

Review :
Thinking Visually really does just what it says on the cover ... after reading it I was inspired to rush over to my drawing board with pens and brushes and start making images! The book is really well structured and designed ... It is full of ideas, images and information in an easily digestible format ... The projects at the end are a really nice idea ... really good value. The text for the book is fresh and will be relevant for my students. The book has a large amount of references for students to follow up on. Thank you again, the book is a breath of fresh air... This book has been a great resource because it has allowed my students to gain insight into the work, techniques and thought processes of practising illustrators and designers. The overall design of the book is clearly laid out ... incredibly easy to digest. Importantly, it has inspired and supports the importance of research and experimentation... A wide range of inspiring ideas and examples of project work. Particularly useful are images of studio spaces, suggested projects and interviews with practitioners. A book to get you thinking on those days when the dreaded blank page is looking blanker. This book is very impressive - it has a contemporary approach and the writing whilst manageable does go to some degree of depth in discussing pertinent issues around illustration. Well designed like other AVA books and certainly a good book to see as key text. This was an exciting book to flip through ... The inspirations and advice is great and important, and I love the ethical practice section... This book is very impressive – it has a contemporary approach and the writing whilst manageable does go to some degree of depth in discussing pertinent issues around illustration. Well designed like other AVA books and certainly a good book to see as key text. It's a great introduction and overview of the field. I especially appreciate the "Eureka" and "Method in the Madness" sections as they both discuss the creative process and provide suggestions for exercises in creativity. The book provides exposure to a variety of work and philosophy representing a range of illustrators and media. Thinking Visually is complete and authoritative, groundbreaking for students and though-provoking for everyone. [It] provides a broad understanding of illustration in context of communication design. Featuring the work of more than a hundred illustrators and students from around the world, Thinking Visually is a useful resource on international contemporary practice.
