Fernand Gasiglia présente le carnet de route de son grand-père Jules Gasiglia, soldat de 14/18. Jules a pris des notes durant toute la guerre et les a rassemblé en 1920. 2 août 1914. Branle-bas de combat. Les cloches sonnent à toute volée. Comme une traînée de poudre, les mots: mobilisation générale, la guerre est déclarée, sont prononcés indistinctement par les occupants de la caserne St-Charles, sise sur un mamelon, tout près de la gare du même nom, à Marseille. Dans la chambre n° 100 au 1er étage, à l'aile gauche du bâtiment, les musiciens s'habillent à la hâte; dès le réveil, ils ont reçu l'ordre de se tenir à la disposition du magasin d'habillement. Chacun d'eux est atterré par les événements, car je dois bien l'avouer, dans l'anxiété de la veille, personne de nous n'avait pu croire à un conflit que les journaux, pourtant, laissaient pressentir depuis plusieurs jours. Ainsi commence le carnet de route d'un soldat musicien de 23 ans, qui allait tout juste finir son service militaire, embarqué avec des millions d'autres dans une guerre dont nul ne pouvait imaginer qu'elle prendrait les proportions d'un cataclysme. Les musiciens du régiment n'iront pas au combat, ils seront brancardiers. Arrivés en Lorraine, ils marchent sous la pluie, dans la boue, de village en village pour installer leur cantonnement, c'est le plus souvent un peu de paille qui tient lieu de lit pour trouver le repos quelques heures dans le meilleur des cas. Le canon tonne, les blessés commencent à affluer, il faut faire face avec tout le courage du coeur.
