About the Book
This text refutes the common perception of metaphor as a marginal device in communication or an elaboration of the main idea. Here, metaphor is shown to have the power to illuminate the world in its own way and to create a new way of representing reality. The contributors to this book discuss various metaphors in which the unifying focus is music and musical activity, drawing examples from Western as well as non-Western music and societies. Essays cover such topics as: poetic and musical convergences and divergences in the works of Arnold Schoenberg; meaning in the works of Charles Ives; social commentary in Haydn's Goldoni operas; the interrelationship between medicine and music and its Arabic sources; music and shamanic power; the embodiment of music in the mind, body and spirit; and types of metaphoric transfer.
