About the Book

This volume contains selected papers presented at the 2nd Soil Residue Analysis Workshop held in Lausanne, Switzerland, on 11-13 March 1991, which discuss recent developments of analytical chemistry for a better understanding of soil pollution. The papers are organized into three main topic areas: analysis and fate of heavy metals (including speciation), pesticides and organic pollutants, and soil chemistry and soil organic matter characterization.

Table of Contents:
Part 1 Heavy metals: heavy metal contents in the soils of Switzerland, H. Vogel, et al; mobility of heavy metals in soil profiles, F.-L. Domergue and J.-C. Vedy; effect of liquid animal manure application on the solubilization of heavy metals from soil, J. Japenga, et al; dynamics of heavy metals in soils of a reed bed system, W.W. Wenzel; desorption of heavy metals from typical soil components (clay, peat) with glycine, K. Fischer, et al; determination of thallium in soil, K.S. Patel and N. Agarwal; isotopic composition as an indicator of origin of lead accumulations in surface soils, J.R. Bacon, et al; trace element speciation in soils and sediments using sequential chemical extraction methods, A.V. Hirner; prediction of plant contamination by cadmium and zinc based on soil extraction method and contents in seedlings, M. Sanka and M. Dolezal; in situ characterization of heavy metal surface reactions - the chromium case, L. Charlet and A. Manceau. Part 2 Pesticides and organic pollutants: a review of the extraction of herbicide residues from aged Saskatchewan field soils, A.E. Smith; soil type and herbicides adsorption, E. Barriuso and R. Calvet; screening and monitoring of herbicides behaviour in soils by enzyme immunoassays, R.J. Schnieder, et al; ames mutagenicity tests of three acetanilide herbicides during their alkaline degradation, R. Lekevicius, et al; bioavailability of polychlorinated biphenyl congeners in the soil to earthworm (L.rubellus) system, B. Larsen, et al; the nonreversibility of adsorption-desorption of dieldrin and lindane on chitin in seawater, J.M. Santana-Casiano, et al; lindane adsorption-desorption on chitin in seawater, M. Gonzalez-Davila, et al. Part 3 Soil organic matter and soil chemistry: binding of organic pollutants to soil organic matter, I. Scheunert, et al; derivatization of humic compounds - an analytical approach for bound organic residues, K. Haider, et all; characterization of wastes from olive and sugarbeet processing industries and effects of their application upon the organic fraction of agricultural soils, F.J. Gonzalea-Vila, et al; effects of fluorine deposition on the chemistry of acid luvisols.
