About the Book

This book is one of a series providing a focus for papers on most aspects of phase transitions in condensed matter. Although emphasis is placed primarily on experimental work, theoretical papers are also published if they have some bearing on experimental results. The areas of interest include structural (ferroelastic, high-pressure, order-disorder, Jahn-Teller, martensitic) phase transitions, geophysical phase transitions, metal-insulator superconducting and superfluid transitions, magnetic phase transitions, critical phenomena and physical properties at phase transitions including liquid crystals, and technological applications of phase transitions. This book contains invited articles devoted to special topics, such as the theory of band structure changes in perovskites induced by ferroelectric phase transition.

Table of Contents:
Part 1: theory of band structure changes in perovkites induced by ferroelectric phase transition, Castet-Mejean; the changes in electronic structure and optical properties of magnetic semiconductors at magnetic phase transitions, S.G. Ovchinnikov; the anomalies of optical properties of d- and f-transition metals during magnetic transformations, M.M. Kirillova and Yu.V. Knyazev; electronic properties of Pb(ZrTi)O3 solid solutions, T. Kala; optical properties and radiation effects in layered crystals of (CnH2n + nNH3)2MCI4: n = 1,2,3; M = Cd, Cu, Mn, T. Yoshinari; applications of optical activity to studies of phase transitions, J. Kobayashi; optical studies of the incommensurate phase of quartz, G. Dolino et al; linear birefringence studies of incommensurate systems: 1. NaNO2, U. Bianchi et al; linear birefringence studies of incommensurate systems: 2. KFeF4, U. Bianchi et al; birefringence studies of A2BX4 compounds with incommensurate phases, J. Fousek; new compounds with incommensurate phases: Cs2CdI4 and Cs2ZnI4, S.V. Melnikova and S.V. Primak; optical properties and phase diagram of (TMA)2FeC14, N.R. Ivanov et al; electric field effect on the phase transitions in betaine phosphates and arsenates, J. Kroupa; anomalous birefringence and dilatation in the Rb(H,D)3(SeO3)2 near normal-incommensurate phase transitiona - fluctuations and defects, N.R. Ivanov; phase transitions in single crystals of proustite Ag3AsS3, S.R. Yang and K.N.R. Taylor. Part 2: dispersion of the birefringence in (C12H25NH3)2ZnCI4 and (C12H25NH3)2ZnCI4 - Co around their isotropic points, J. Etxebarria et al; spontaneous birefringence and polarization studies on boracite Cr3B7O13CI, Z.G. Ye et al; investigation of the phase transitions of ferroelectric KIO3 and KNbO3 crystals by optical diffraction, Wang Xiu et al; Dezhong; birefringence and phase transitions in liquid crystals, G. Pelzl and A. Hauser; optical study of the antiferromagnetic-paramagnetic phase transition in chromium oxide Cr2O3, R.V. Pisarev et al; faraday-optical study of the tri-to-bicritical crossover in anisotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnets Fe1-xNixCI2,0.18 is smaller than or equal to "x" which is smaller than or equal to 0.67, E. Cleve and W. Kleemann.
