About the Book

Written both for experimentalists and theorists, this book provides a theoretical basis for the interpretation of data on the influence of defects on the properties of ferroelectrics and related materials. The authors use a general theoretical approach to discuss such questions as the origin and properties of the bias field, influence of defects on the anomalies of thermodynamic quantities and kinetic coefficient light scattering phenomena. General questions such as the percolation of ordering, glass state, and nonergodic behaviour are discussed, along with the smearing of phase transitions important in applications.

Table of Contents:
Part 1 Elements of the theory of phase transitions in perfect crystals: landau theory; fluctuation theory; specific features of kinetics near phase transitions; order parameter fluctuations and scattering phenomena. Part 2 Phase transitions in an imperfect crystal - general state of theory and experiment: smearing of the phase transition; a small concentration of defects - the effective hamiltonian, temperature region close to the phase transition, temperature regions not too close to the phase transition; a large concentration of defects; annealed and frozen-in defects. Part 3 Space distribution of the order parameter induced by a point defect near the phase transition: "Local Field" components - one component order parameter, the multicomponent order parameter, influence of long range forces; the "Local Transition Temperature" component. Part 4 Phase transition anomalies in imperfect crystals - thermodynamic quantities and kinetic coefficients: thermodynamic properties; defects of the "Random Local Field" type in nonferroelectric and nonferroelastic crystals, defects of "Random Local Field" type - influence of long-range forces, defects of the "Random Local Transition Temperature" type, general discussion; dynamic response functions - the response function for the order parameter, dispersion and attenuation of sound, concluding remarks. Part 5 Scattering phenomena: elastic scattering - neutron and x-ray scattering; light scattering - general remarks, nonferroelectric and nonferroelastic phase transitions, proper ferroelectrics and proper ferroelastics; inelastic scattering - neutron scattering and the "Allowed" light scattering, forbidden raman lines. Part 6 Polarized defects - bias field: theoretical background; some experimental data. Part 7 Model theories: continuous-medium models - strong T-defects - local phase transitions; microscoic models. Part 8 Miscellaneous: role of elastic strains near defects; dislocation induced anomalies; plane defects - the crystal surface as the defect; the influence of defects on the properties of incommensurate phases; structural glasses.
