Soixante millions d'hommes dans le monde se sont trouves meles a la Premiere Guerre mondiale. Parmi eux, plus de quatre millions eurent a connaitre, a un moment ou a un autre, les miseres et les risques des premieres lignes: on les appela les poilus. La guerre des generaux et des ministres, la guerre des batailles decrites par des specialistes de l'histoire militaire, deplacant divisions et regiments sur la carte comme s'ils jouaient aux echecs ont ete souvent montrees. La guerre des sans-grades, des pousse-cailloux, on la connait moins. Ils avaient une vingtaine d'annees, etaient boulangers, ferronniers ou paysans. Du jour au lendemain ils devinrent artilleurs ou fantassins. L'un d'eux raconta: Le gaz, la boue, les poux, la faim, les ravitaillements qui n'arrivaient pas, le masque qu'il fallait nettoyer toutes les deux heures parce qu'il nous faisait baver. On vivait dans la salete. On etait malheureux. On etait comme des betes. Quelle connerie, la guerre ! Jamais Jacques Prevert n'eut autant raison. Pierre Stephany, dont on connait la maniere de raconter l'histoire comme une histoire en ajoutant aux faits un supplement de vie et d'emotion, s'interesse cette fois aux poilus. Le fond historique de ce livre, ce sont les grands evenements d'aout 1914 a novembre 1918, particulierement en France et en Belgique. Mais la force du recit, ce sont les poilus au front. Les poilus au repos, dans les combats, tasses dans les trous - un reseau de tranchees et de boyaux qui faisait des milliers de kilometres, sur les 800 kilometres separant la mer de la Suisse, guettant l'ennemi, jetes dans des attaques meurtrieres toujours inutiles: la France a elle seule eut plus de 1 397 000 tues. A propos de l'auteur Pierre Stephany est de ces temoins, de moins en moins nombreux, a qui leurs parents ont raconte leur propre Grande Guerre; celui que l'institutrice ou l'instituteur conduisaient le 11 novembre au pied du monument aux morts, qui ont connu dans leur village ou leur quartier des survivants - celui qui avait ete gaze a Ypres, celui a qui il manquait un bras, celui dont une balle avait troue le casque et qui etait reste aveugle. Cela donne un accent de verite et un degre d'emotion, plus attachants encore a cette histoire simple et quotidienne d'hommes ordinaires meles a des peripeties d'une violence extraordinaire.
