Tres rapidement, ils devinrent une formidable organisation internationale. Des dons de vastes proprietes en Europe et a l'etranger leur furent faits; Des droits et des privileges speciaux leur furent accordes par les papes et les rois. Vetus d'une tunique blanche arborant une croix rouge, ils deviennent en Occident la premiere armee religieuse en uniforme et elaborent un vaste reseau financier qui s'etend de Londres a Paris, jusqu'a l'Euphrate et au Nil. Bien qu'ils fussent devenus riches et puissants, en tant qu'individus leur existence etait simple et austere. Leur courage etait legendaire, leur devouement absolu, leur attrition profonde. Au moins 20 000 Templiers sont morts sur le champ de bataille ou apres avoir ete fait prisonniers, refusant de renoncer a leur foi pour sauver leur vie. Puis vint le temps de leur decheance. Vaincus par les musulmans a Saint Jean d'Acre, massacres par leurs freres chretiens en Occident. Le vendredi 13 octobre 1307, ils sont arretes dans toute la France et bientot partout ailleurs en Europe. Ils sont accuses d'heresies abominables, d'obscenites, de pratiques homosexuelles et de culte des idoles, abominations avouees sous la torture. La fin arrivera en 1314, lorsque le dernier grand maitre fut brule vif sur le bucher.
