Les communautes juive et musulmane sont les premieres victimes du climat d'intolerance qui s'installe dans notre pays. Pourtant, les musulmans et les juifs de France s'efforcent d'entretenir des relations fraternelles fondees sur le principes de dialogue, de comprehension et de respect mutuel. Les deux auteurs de cet ouvrage oeuvrent depuis de nombreuses annees pour aller plus loin dans ce dialogue, l'approfondir, le sortir du cenacle des experts, le porter sur la place publique et le faire partager a l'ensemble de la nation. Chacun sait que les spheres closes de l'identite, qu'elles soient politiques, philosophiques ou religieuses, conduisent a l'affrontement et transforment le droit a la difference en une dangereuse derive communautariste. L'identite sacree de nos communautes ne doit pas etre l'occasion d'un repli sur soi. L'objectif est bien de vivre ensemble, dans une meme aspiration au bonheur, et non de constituer sur le territoire de la Republique une mosaique ou chacun serait enchaine a ses doutes, a la peur qu'il a de l'Autre. C'est donc un vibrant appel au dialogue qui est lance a un moment ou l'histoire nous place face a nos responsabilites. Notre pays ne doit pas se laisser entrainer dans la spirale de l'opposition entre les communautes. Si l'Histoire contingente est faite de soubresauts, de conflits violents, d'affrontements entre les diversites, il appartient aussi aux hommes politiques d'entretenir l'espoir d'une paix universelle. C'est dans ce contexte que le fait religieux retrouve toute sa legitimite, car la religion n'est pas separable de l'humanisme.
