About the Book

This volume attempts to define the nature and forms of violence in the work of Samuel Beckett. Powered by language, violence appears as a dual reflection, in the tortures inspired by Sade and in the gaze of the onlooker. There follows a study of the second volume of the Lettres together with a chronology of Beckett's travels in Germany.

About the Author :
Contributor Biography - English Llewellyn Brown, a teacher and holder of the agregation in modern literature at the international Lycee of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, is the author of Figures du mensonge litteraire. Etudes sur l'ecriture au xx siecle (2005), L'Esthetique du pli dans l'oeuvre de Henri Michaux (2007), Beckett, les fictions breves. Voir et dire (2008), Savoir de l'amour (2012), Beckett, Lacan and the Voice (2016). Contributor Biography - French Julien Roumette, maitre de conferences a l'universite Toulouse - Jean-Jaures, travaille sur G. Perec, R. Gary, J. Malaquais. Il a notamment publie Etude sur la Promesse de l'aube (Paris, 2006), Romain Gary, l'ombre de l'histoire (Toulouse, 2007), L'Irrespect, entre idealisme et nihilisme (Toulouse, 2012) et codirige le numero d'Europe consacre a Gary (2014). Il est redacteur en chef de la revue Litteratures.

Review - French Loin d'habiter les marges de l'oeuvre de Samuel Beckett, la violence y occupe une place cruciale. Telle est l'hypothese de ce volume, qui cherche a en definir la nature et les formes. Se manifestant dans des eclats meurtriers survenant entre doubles speculaires, ou dans des supplices inspires par Sade, cette violence s'entend comme un effet du langage, qu'elle ne laisse jamais s'apaiser. Le domaine de l'image aussi se trouve menace de destruction, tant par un regard intrusif que par l'arbitraire des mots. Une etude du deuxieme volume des Lettres de Beckett et une chronologie de son voyage en Allemagne completent cette exploration.
