« Les peuples heureux n'ont pas d'histoire ». La citation est peut-être trop connue, elle n'en conserve pas moins tout son intérêt car, lorsque Georges Pompidou s'exprima en ces termes, il figea par la même occasion une part de ce que la mémoire collective conserve de son septennat tronqué. Sans doute en aurait-il conçu une légitime fierté et également serait-il interloqué par certaines lectures contestataires et à charge faites désormais de cette période. Les historiens, censés donc, selon ses souhaits, ne pas avoir trop de travail avec cette période, se trouvent désormais placés au contraire devant l'exploration de ce qui semblait aller de soi. L'empirisme et le subjectivisme du questionnement s'effacent devant l'identification d'indicateurs dits « sérieux ». En la matière, l'histoire des représentations s'adosse au chapitre d'une solide histoire des modernités matérielles. Il reste que l'on ne tombe pas amoureux d'une croissance économique et que le bonheur national n'est pas que la somme de vies heureuses égoïstes et insouciantes... L'analyse de la place laissée par un Président, certes en majesté, mais discret et non intrusif, permet de réinterpréter les canons d'un bonheur privé susceptible d'être ressenti par chaque citoyen. Ce dont la France pompidolienne hérite, ce qu'elle porte de neuf, de durable, ce qu'elle rend plus accessible et ce qu'elle va léguer par la suite, voilà les perspectives que ce livre entend explorer au cours d'une réflexion collective nourrie par la confrontation avec des acteurs.

Mathieu Flonneau est maître de conférences en histoire contemporaine à l'Université Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne, spécialiste des mobilités et de l'automobilisme. Il est directeur de l'Institut Administration Économique et Sociale. Enseignant-chercheur au SIRICE-CRHI, LabEx « Écrire une Histoire Nouvelle de l'Europe », il est président de l'association internationale T²M, Trafic, Transport&Mobility. Christine MANIGAND est professeur d'histoire contemporaine à l'Université Paris 3-Sorbonne Nouvelle et présidente du Conseil scientifique de l'Institut Georges Pompidou. Emilia ROBIN est agrégée et docteur en histoire contemporaine de Sorbonne-Universités. Spécialiste des questions internationales, elle a été directrice de la recherché à l'Institut Georges Pompidou.
