Les textes rassembles dans cet ouvrage ne defendent pas une these particuliere a propos de laicite et d'humanisme. Ils forment plutot un ensemble de reflexions polyphoniques qui se presentent comme une contribution philosophique, juridique, politique et sociologique a la question de la neutralite religieuse de l'Etat. Thomas De Koninck aborde la question de la laicite sous l'angle de l'identite tout en insistant sur les droits de l'identite specifiquement humaine. Jacques Dufresne s'interroge sur la notion d'humanisme a l'epoque du cyborg et des appels repetes au transhumanisme par une modernite qui semble croire que l'on renouvelle la pensee en accrochant le prefixe "post" a de vieilles idees. Georges Leroux cible les principaux enjeux de la neutralite religieuse face a la laicite de l'ecole. Le juriste Guillaume Rousseau reflechit a la question de la laicite a partir de la perspective du droit compare. Le sociologue Mathieu Bock-Cote examine le projet de loi 60 sur la laicite, qui fut celui du Parti quebecois, sous les angles de l'identite, d'une critique du multiculturalisme et de l'ouverture, par la laicite, d'un monde commun. Normand Baillargeon departage pour sa part les concepts de laicite republicaine et de laicite ouverte, en plus d'examiner les principaux defis qui s'ouvrent a elles. Ce recueil comprend une chronique de Mohamed Lotfi des debats quebecois sur la laicite du printemps 2014; la plume agile de Lofti cerne bien les enjeux concrets de la question, en plus de la faire sortir du cercle universitaire. A la fin du recueil figure un texte de Voltaire sur la tolerance, inscrivant dans une perspective historique les questions abordees par les auteurs et illustrant la permanence d'un debat dont cet ouvrage se veut l'un des nombreux echos.

Charles Le Blanc est professeur agrege a l'Universite d'Ottawa. Il est auteur et traducteur de plusieurs ouvrages dont Le complexe d'Hermes, laureat du prix Victor-Barbeau 2010 de l'Academie des lettres du Quebec. Il a recu le Prix litteraire Le Droit 2015 dans la categorie fiction pour Catin Basile.
