Edition etablie et commentee par Jean-Louis Prat Enfoui dans un recueil qui, depuis bien longtemps, n'est plus reedite, cet ouvrage de Hippolyte Taine sur le recit du perible des Dix Mille, ces mercenaires engages par Cyrus le Jeune contre son frere Artaxerxes II, puis leur retraite vers l'Hellespont, tel que relate par Xenophon dans l'Anabase, est pourtant bien connu par quelques citations que se transmettent pieusement les hellenistes, notamment celles-ci: Rien de plus curieux que cette armee grecque, republique voyageuse qui delibere et qui agit, qui combat et qui vote, sorte d'Athenes errante au milieu de l'Asie; Le livre est un journal de marche, sans commentaires, ce qui lui donne un air de verite frappante. C'est parce que Taine a fait ecole au XIXe siecle que l'Anabase est souvent lue comme un reportage pittoresque, ecrit au jour le jour par un correspondant de guerre, qui suivait l'armee de Cyrus sans y etre general, capitaine ou soldat... et meme sans connaitre l'objectif de Cyrus, et sans reflechir sur ce qui lui est arrive. Taine ecrit cet article pour se delasser de ses autres etudes litteraires et historiques. C'est pour lui une occasion de retraduire les passages qui lui semblent les plus interessants du recit de Xenophon. En procedant ainsi, il nous offre un resume a sa maniere, incluant la "montee" a partir de la mer, jusqu'au coeur de l'Empire perse, la "descente" qui nous mene au bord d'une autre mer et la derniere etape, qui longe cette mer jusqu'a Chrysopolis, le Bosphore et Byzance. Si la version de Taine est contestable, elle lui permet de faire un resume de l'oeuvre: il est fort interessant de lire cette histoire abregee, tout en goutant la saveur du recit de Xenophon.
