Les 27 et 28 novembre 2007 s'est tenue au centre Pompidou a Paris la premiere edition des Entretiens du nouveau monde industriel. Cette manifestation, unique en France, a pour objectif d'analyser les tendances caracteristiques de notre epoque, par ou se transforme tres profondement une societe industrielle confrontee a de nouvelles limites, mais aussi portee par d'autres dynamiques - situation complexe et contradictoire au sein de laquelle il s'agit d'ouvrir des perspectives. Les Entretiens ont porte sur les enjeux aussi bien de ce que l'on appelle l'innovation ascendante que du faconnage de nos existences par les transformations industrielles a l'heure des technologies numeriques (comme technologies cognitives et comme technologies culturelles), et a l'aube des technologies que l'on dit transformationnelles (qui sont les biotechnologies et nanotechnologies). Les mutations en cours et les contradictions qu'elles generent imposent de repenser les pratiques de la recherche & developpement et du design - terme entendu ici dans un sens elargi, et qui s'applique desormais a tous les aspects de nos existences. Quelles en sont les implications politiques, sociales et economiques ? En quoi le modele industriel lui-meme s'en trouve-t-il transforme ? Celui-ci, forge au XIXe siecle, a conduit apres la Seconde Guerre mondiale a la planetarisation de la societe de consommation. Or, il semble de nos jours a la fois rencontrer ses limites et ouvrir de nouvelles possibilites en renversant l'opposition producteur/consommateur (en particulier, dans le domaine du numerique) et en conferant a la matiere aussi bien qu'au vivant une plasticite jusqu'alors inconcevable. Le design devient de fait une activite de sculpture de l'individu et de la societe qui lui ouvre et lui assigne des perspectives et des responsabilites sans precedent - aussi exaltantes qu'ecrasantes. Une nouvelle relation entre conception industrielle et pratiques quotidiennes de l'existence est en cours de definition.
