Pierre de Fermat, l'un des plus grands mathematiciens francais du XVII siecle, s'etait contente de porter dans la marge de son cahier de travail: "xn + yn = zn impossible si n > 2. J'ai trouve une solution merveilleuse, mais la place me manque ici pour la developper." Ce theoreme allait devenir, pour les trois cent cinquante annees a venir, le Graal du monde des mathematiques. Les plus puissants esprits de tous les siecles et de toutes les nations tenterent de venir a bout de cette equation. Leonhard Euler, genie du XVIII, dut admettre sa defaite, Sophie Germain, au XIXe siecle prit l'identite d'un homme pour se lancer dans des etudes jusqu-la interdites aux femmes. Evariste Galois, la vieille de sa mort, jeta sur quelques feuilles une histoire une theorie qui allait revolutionner la science. Yutaka Taniyama se suicida par depit alors que Paul Wolfskehl trouva dans cette enigme une raison de vivre. Et en 1993, un jeune Anglais, Andrew Wiles, professeur a Princeton, put enfin regler, apres sept annees de recherche solitaire et quelques mois de doutes, le sort de ce fantastique probleme devant la communaute scientifique emerveillee. Le dernier Theoreme de Fermat est le recit de cette quete. Une veritable epopee qui met en scene, a travers l'histoire des mathematiques, les intelligentes les plus brillantes et la fantastique determination d'un homme. Simon Sing est docteur en physique nucleaire. Il a travaille au laboratoire du CERN a Geneve; il est aussi journaliste scientifique.

About the Author :
Simon Singh est titulaire d'un doctorat de physique des particules de l'Universite de Cambridge. Ancien producteur de la BBC, il a realise un documentaire tres remarque sur le dernier theoreme de Fermat et a ecrit le best-seller du meme nom (Lattes 1998). Il a ensuite publie une Histoire des codes secrets (Lattes 1999) qui a fourni la matiere a une serie documentaire de la chaine britannique.
