1923. Comme l'ensemble de l'economie francaise, l'activite goemoniere et l'industrie de l'iode, completement desorganisees par la guerre 1914-1918, peinent a retrouver leurs niveaux d'antan, sur la cote bretonne. Apres trente ans de collaboration et d'amitie, Francois Kerneis et Yves Kerleo, decident, en meme temps, d'arreter leurs activites, respectivement dans l'iode et le pain de mer. Yves et Anne, sa femme, se retrouvent seuls, au Conquet, leurs enfants les quittant, l'un apres l'autre, pour vivre leur vie. Francois et Estelle Lemarchand sont dans le meme cas, a Paris. Pourtant, leur amitie sort renforcee de la guerre par les liens entre leur enfants. Quand debute le roman, Gwen-Ael a 28 ans. Il termine ses etudes a Paris tout en assumant, du mieux qu'il le peut, la direction de la societe familiale, l'usine d'iode du Conquet, que Francois, son pere lui a laissee, deux ans plus tot. Une rencontre dans le train qui le ramene au pays puis un accident a l'usine vont bouleverser sa vie. Confronte aux difficultes, il s'apercoit rapidement qu'il n'est pas seul et que les nouveaux retraites ne demandent qu'a l'aider. Cet appui se revelera-t-il suffisant pour faire redemarrer l'usine, puis pour lutter contre le declin annonce de l'industrie de l'iode ? Gwen-Ael et Viviane, Karl et Julia, Aurelie et Jean-Yves, les heros de ce roman, s'aiment, se marient, enfantent, souffrent, travaillent et s'amusent, vivent, en un mot, comme leurs parents, comme, encore, tous ceux qui partagent, avec eux, cette epopee de l'iode et des laminaires. Tout cela, au prisme de l'histoire et des evenements de l'epoque qui, - folie des uns, lachete des autres-, les menent tous, inexorablement, vers une guerre annoncee, programmee, ineluctable.
