Francois veut la voir lui aussi. Jean Mocquet est apothicaire et chirurgien. Il a la charge d'intendant du Cabinet des singularites du roi Henri IV. Il a decouvert Goa grace au livre du botaniste portugais Garcia da Orta, qui revele l'infinite de plantes, d'epices, d'herbes indiennes et leur utilite. Jean n'a qu'un desir: herboriser a Goa. Dona Margarida da Fonseca Serrao est veuve a 24 ans. De haute noblesse, attachee a la cour du vice-roi du Portugal et aux valeurs de sa classe, que peut-elle esperer a present ? Elle s'est resignee a cette vie de conventions et de rigueur. Mais une lettre du frere de son defunt mari l'appelle elle aussi en Inde. Apres une carriere dans la marine, Francois Bellec a publie une vingtaine d'ouvrages et a contribue a diverses encyclopedies a propos de l'ouverture des routes oceaniques, de la science de la navigation et des relations entre l'homme et la mer. Historien amoureux de l'epopee lusitanienne, il est membre etranger de l'Academia de Marinha de Portugal. Ancien directeur du Musee national de la Marine, membre et ancien president de l'Academie de marine, il est vice-president de la Societe de Geographie.
