Un metis n'a pas de majuscule. J'approchais de mes quarante ans quand je l'ai decouvert. On ecrit de maniere correcte un Noir ou un Blanc, mais un metis. Pourquoi une lettre capitale a mon pere, pourquoi une lettre capitale a ma mere, pourquoi une lettre minuscule des lors qu'il s'agit de mes freres et moi ? On m'a repondu: un Noir, c'est une race; un Blanc, c'est une race; un metis, ce n'est pas une race. A partir de quand est-on une race ? Le metissage est a la mode. On nous dit que c'est une chance, que c'est l'avenir, et meme que c'est un progres pour la France et pour l'humanite. Quelque part, nous sommes tous des metis est une jolie petite machine a raboter les souffrances - celles des autres. C'est parfois une maniere polie de claquer la porte au nez. Alors que l'on proclame partout que le metissage est une benediction, tout conspire a prouver le contraire. Les metis sont percus comme des humains a la fois incomplets et encombres: ni tout a fait noirs, ni tout a fait blancs, on leur reproche pourtant, fatalement, d'etre trop noirs ou trop blancs. On leur denie methodiquement tous les benefices d'une double culture que les discours politiquement corrects ne cessent pourtant de valoriser. Et on ne cesse d'exiger d'eux qu'ils trahissent explicitement la lignee de leur pere ou de leur mere. Et, si on observe de pres le fonctionnement des societes metissees nees de l'esclavage, on ne peut que s'inquieter du destin auquel sont promis les metis dans les nations occidentales. Car, curieusement, on laisse suinter ici ou la, et sans s'en inquieter, la haine des metis.
