Par les questions majeures qu'il souleve: celle sur une humanite qui engendre de generation en generation des tortionnaires qui se considerent comme des militants ou des executants aux ordres de leurs chefs. Celle aussi sur la gangrene qui ronge les democraties quand elles s'accommodent de la torture pratiquee en secret avec le consentement implicite de ses gouvernants Robert Badinter. Contrairement a une idee bien ancree dans les esprits, la torture ne sert pas a faire parler mais au contraire, a faire taire. Museler non seulement la victime mais aussi par un effet communicatif de la terreur, faire taire l'entourage, la presse, l'opposition. Elle n'empeche pas d'ecrire. Dans ce livre, le Docteur Duterte esquisse quelques portraits de victimes a travers leurs recits, et les echanges qu'ils ont eus ensemble. L'inimaginable de la torture fait qu'il est difficile d'apprehender l'enfer par lequel sont passes les milliers de patients qu'il a recu depuis 1994. Ces portraits mettent en exergue la resistance, le courage, l'Humanite de ces hommes, femmes et enfants qui ont eu, pour des raisons toutes injustifiables, a endurer ce que l'inhumanite a produit de plus effrayant. Car c'est bien l'appartenance a l'humanite qui se degage de ce livre, cette humanite qui dans sa part la plus lumineuse devient l'arme la plus admirable pour contrer, mettre en echec la barbarie des tortionnaires. Meme s'ils se croient parfois battus, ecrases, ces hommes et ces femmes sont la preuve evidente de l'echec des bourreaux. C'est la victoire des victimes qui se degage de ces pages terribles et une lecon de courage pour tous.

About the Author :
Pierre Duterte, medecin, psychotherapeute et therapeute familial est ne a Tourcoing en 1953. En 1994 il s'engage comme medecin benevole, puis en 1995 devient salarie et enfin medecin directeur d'un centre de soins pour victimes de torture. En 2001 il co-fonde l'association Parcours de Jeunes, puis ouvre en 2002 le Centre de Soins Parcours d'Exil. Il a ete distingue Generaliste d'Or pour son activite professionnelle et ses engagements.
