Le 1er aout 1914, la France decrete la mobilisation generale. Comme trois millions cinq cent mille Francais, le lieutenant Charles Peguy recoit sa feuille de route, embrasse les siens et rejoint son unite, le 276e regiment d'infanterie de reserve, a Coulommiers. Intellectuel engage, normalien d'origine modeste, chretien fervent, republicain et dreyfusard, pamphletaire et poete, Peguy est a la croisee des grandes traditions francaises et incarne plus que tout autre ce qu'on appelle encore le genie francais . S'il vit ce moment avec un sentiment de plenitude, c'est que s'impose a lui comme a tous le devoir sacre de defendre la patrie, et, a travers elle, un systeme de valeurs democratiques issu des Lumieres et de la Revolution face a une puissance dont il a, l'un des premiers, compris la menace qu'elle faisait peser sur la vieille Europe. Ce combat unit dans une meme determination, une meme exaltation quarante millions de Francais, sans distinction d'opinions et de croyances, d'origines et de conditions. La bataille des frontieres se solde par une serie de terribles defaites. Comme des centaines de milliers de soldats, le lieutenant Charles Peguy et ses hommes doivent marcher jour et nuit pendant quatre semaines sous des pluies battantes ou dans des chaleurs torrides, les pieds en sang dans leurs godillots cloutes, reculant sans cesse devant l'invasion ennemie jusqu'a ce que Joffre donne l'ordre de la grande contre-offensive de la Marne. Charles Peguy ne verra pas cette premiere victoire. Il meurt le 5 septembre 1914 pres de Meaux dans un assaut du 276e face aux mitrailleuses allemandes. Il repose depuis avec plus d'une centaine de ses soldats dans une grande tombe a l'endroit meme ou ils ont ete ensemble tues a l'ennemi . Michel Laval, en racontant les trente-cinq derniers jours de la vie de Charles Peguy, entonne un requiem a la gloire de ce vieux peuple francais en marche, avant que quatre ans d'une guerre impitoyable et inhumaine ne l'engloutissent dans la boue et le sang et emportent la grande illusion d'une derniere guerre pour la justice et la paix.
