le livre Elle etait plus que belle, elle etait magnifique. Lady Hamilton, nee Emily Lyon, avait l'eau du ciel dans le regard et le feu sur les levres. Nee le 26 avril 1765, dans un petit hameau naufrage entre le pays de Galles et la mer d'Irlande, elle grandit dans le plus parfait denuement. Son pere, forgeron de metier, meurt deux mois apres la naissance de sa fille. Sa mere, Mary, ne sait ni lire ni ecrire. La petite Emily, surnommee aussi Emma, va pourtant connaitre un destin eblouissant. Femme de menage, vendeuse, serveuse, courtisee par de jeunes nobles oisifs, fille-mere a l'age de 16 ans, elle gravira, presque a son insu, tous les echelons de la societe londonnienne, jusqu'au jour ou elle epousera lord William Hamilton, ambassadeur de sa Tres Gracieuse Majeste au royaume de Naples. Il a trente-cinq ans de plus qu'Emily. Il est eperdument amoureux d'elle. Grace a lui, la jeune paysanne devenue ambassadrice (elle n'a alors que 23 ans) apprivoise le monde des lettres, de l'art, de la musique et les meandres de la politique. Elle devient la confidente de la reine de Naples, Marie-Caroline, fille de Marie-Therese d'Autriche. Aiguillonnee par son mari, elle se decouvre de veritables dons de cantatrice et surtout d'extraordinaires facultes de mime. Ses apparitions eblouissent les spectateurs les plus critiques. Un matin d'automne 1793, une rencontre bouleverse sa vie. Un navire, L'Agamemnon, vient d'arriver en rade de Naples. A son bord, un jeune capitaine. Il s'appelle Horatio Nelson, 35 ans, marie depuis six ans et demi. Entre la jeune ambassadrice et le futur amiral, c'est le coup de foudre. G. S. L'auteur Gilbert Sinoue est ne en 1947 au Caire. Apres des etudes chez les Jesuites, il entre a l'ecole normale de musique de Paris et etudie la guitare classique, qu'il enseignera par la suite. Il publie en 1987 La Pourpre et l'olivier (Orban, prix Jean d'Heurs du roman historique), en 1989, Avicenne ou la route d'Ispahan (Denoel), puis, en 1991, L'Egyptienne (Denoel, prix litteraire du quartier latin), premier volume d'une saga egyptienne suivie par La Fille du Nil en 1993. En 1996, Le Livre de Saphir ( Denoel) obtient le prix des Libraires. Gilbert Sinoue publie ensuite une biographie de Mehemet Ali, Le Dernier Pharaon (Pygmalion, 1997), et L'Enfant de Bruges (Gallimard, 1999, 90 000 ex.) Ses derniers livres: A mon fils, a l'aube du troisieme millenaire (Gallimard, 2000), Le Livre des sagesses d'Orient (Editions 1, 2000) et Des jours et des nuits (Gallimard, 2001).
