14 juin 1940. L'armee allemande occupe Paris. Le gouvernement francais s'est replie a Bordeaux, alors submergee de refugies. Une Republique exsangue, assaillie de toutes parts, y cedera sous les assauts de ceux-la meme qui etaient censes l'incarner et la defendre. Son agonie est breve: en trois jours - les 15, 16 et 17 juin -, le regime tombe, victime d'un coup d'Etat dans la defaite sans effusion de sang qui porte le marechal Petain au pouvoir. Apres avoir signe l'armistice, Petain obtient les pleins pouvoirs le 10 juillet a Vichy, et en profite pour finir le 11 juillet de liquider la Republique. Paradoxe supreme, ce sont les militaires - Petain, Weygand, Darlan - qui veulent cesser le combat, et les civils - Reynaud, Mendes-France, Mandel - qui veulent le poursuivre. Les premiers auront raison des seconds, animes par une determination puisant sa force dans une haine viscerale de la Republique et dans la peur bleue que leur a inspiree le Front populaire. Et ce sont les responsables de la defaite militaire qui en seront les premiers beneficiaires politiques. Avocat au barreau de Bordeaux depuis trente ans, Gerard Boulanger est egalement president de la Ligue des droits de l'homme de Gironde, ancien president du Syndicat des avocats de France, fondateur et president d'honneur de la confederation Avocats europeens democrates. Il a publie trois ouvrages de reference sur Maurice Papon: Maurice Papon: un technocrate francais dans la collaboration (Seuil, 1993), Papon, un intrus dans la Republique (Seuil, 1997) et Plaidoyer pour quelques Juifs obscurs victimes de Monsieur Papon Calmann-Levy, 2005) En 2006 est paru A mort la gueuse ! chez Calmann-Levy.
