About the Author :
Alban Gautier est professeur d'histoire medievale a l'universite de Caen Normandie et membre junior de l'Institut universitaire de France. Ses travaux portent surtout sur les iles Britanniques et l'Europe du Nord au haut Moyen Age et sur l'histoire de l'alimentation. Il s'est interesse aux origines de la matiere arthurienne et a publie Arthur (Paris, 2007). Marc Rolland est professeur d'etudes anglophones a l'universite du Littoral-Cote-d'Opale. S'interessant a la mythocritique, il a etudie la litterature, le cinema et l'historiographie de periodes presentees comme des ages d'or. Specialiste aussi de la litterature d'imagination, il a consacre un ouvrage aux reecritures arthuriennes du XX siecle, Le Roi Arthur, un mythe heroique au XX siecle (Rennes, 2004). Michelle Szkilnik est professeur de litterature du Moyen Age et directrice du Centre d'etudes du Moyen Age a l'universite Sorbonne nouvelle - Paris 3. Specialiste de litterature narrative, elle a publie divers travaux sur les romans arthuriens en prose et en vers du XII au XV siecles dont L'Archipel du Graal (Geneve, 1991), ainsi que sur les romans de chevalerie tardifs.

Review - French Tenir ensemble Arthur, la mer et la guerre: tel est le defi qu'ont voulu relever les quinze etudes d'histoire et de litterature reunies dans ce volume. Un defi car Arthur, a toutes les epoques ou il a tenu la place que l'on sait dans la culture du monde occidental, n'a guere ete associe aux idees de guerre sur mer, de combat naval ou de defense des cotes. Pourtant, des Ages obscurs a l'aube du Moyen Age jusqu'aux plus recents developpements de la litterature et de la bande dessinee, en passant par l'enluminure medievale et le roman courtois, les auteurs ont su mettre en lumiere une petite musique recurrente, un leitmotiv discret mais toujours present: celui d'une matiere arthurienne qui n'oublie pas que la guerre se mene aussi sur la mer.
