About the Book

Nikolai Leskov (1831-1895) was a master of the skaz, a literary form at the intersection of written text and the oral tradition. By mixing the approaches of W. Benjamin (the ethics of the skaz) and B. Eichenbaum (the poetics of the skaz), this work offers a critical reading of Russian narrative culture and oralized writing.

About the Author :
Catherine Gery is a professor of Russian literature at the National Institute for Oriental Languages and Civilisations (INALCO) and the co-editor of the journal Slovo. She has devoted many works and translations to the oeuvre of Nikolai Leskov. She has published Crime et sexualite dans la culture russe (a propos de la nouvelle de Nikolai Leskov Lady Macbeth du district de Mtsensk et de ses adaptations) [Paris, 2015].

Review :
