Ce quatrieme tome de mon Journal est, comme les precedents, etrange , en ce sens que je n'y relate pas ce qui m'arrive au jour le jour , mais seulement ce qui me vient a l'esprit de facon imprevue et non preparee - et qui, la plupart du temps, m'entraine fort loin de mes occupations du jour. Je vais a l'aventure, accueillant tout, des lors que j'y trouve quelque trait piquant. C'est le vagabondage de mes pensees. Des observations sur des poetes, des ecrivains, des Philosophes (d'Epicure a Clement Rosset) voisinent avec des reflexions sur des problemes de metaphysique, de morale, d'ethique, de politique avec des echanges epistolaires et les lettres memes d'amis ou d'amies (Elodie, Julie, Emilie, Marilyne...). - Il y a toutefois une difference entre ce volume et les precedents. La suite des chapitres n'y est pas gouvernee par le seul hasard des pensees. L'on y trouve, en filigrane, une orientation, et c'est une orientation vers Emilie - qui d'ailleurs donnera son titre au tome V: Emilie. Journal etrange V.

"A quatre-vingt-sept ans, Marcel Conche se presente d'abord avec modestie comme professeur de philosophie emerite a la Sorbonne. Puis en qualite de membre de l'academie d'Athenes. A le voir taper a la machine, la meme depuis quarante ans, sur un petit bureau entre deux bibliotheques tournantes ou abondent les livres de philosophie antique, on pourrait penser que ce Merovingien, comme il se definit parfois, est en decalage avec le monde qui l'entoure. Rien ne serait plus faux. Sorte de vif-argent philosophique, Marce Conche est l'un des penseurs les plus originaux et les plus independants de notre epoque, un philosophe qui cree par lui-meme, en dialoguant avec les textes, loin des salons et en se moquant des modes. Ses ecrits temoignent d'une pensee originale puisant sa source chez les presocratiques, a laquelle le debat actuel sur l'etat de la planete donne une modernite particuliere. Comment peut-on sur les petits riens de la vie comme sur les grandes choses convoquer aussi regulierement les philosophes, ceux de l'Antiquite notamment, pour solliciter leur avis, le faire sien ou le contredire ? Il suffit d'avoir vecu en leur compagnie et de n'avoir jamais voulu etre oriente vers autre chose que la verite. Cette vie d'etude, Marcel Conche en a tres tot pris la decision. Il faut lire ce volume ou il est question de L'Elegance du herisson, qui lui tombe des mains, de Gabrielle Chanel, dont il loue le genie createur; du racisme de Tintin au Congo; et des communistes auxquels il donna sa voix a l'election presidentielle au pretexte qu'ils etaient les seuls a demander la regularisation des sans-papiers. Il dialogue avec Lucrece, saint Augustin, Montaigne et... Jean d'Ormesson.Composer, a 87 ans, un hymne a la joie, quelle lecon. La Corse semble avoir adopte Marcel Conche, du moins Aleria, ou il est respecte comme un sage. Lui se contente d'etre la ou il sait qu'il finira ses jours. Tot leve, il remplit de grands cahiers d'une ecriture fine et sans rature, dans ce style parfait, concret, qui ne se paye pas de mots ( je vois les choses, les mots suivent. Le langage est fait pour parler du reel ). Tel Montaigne en ses Essais, il compose ainsi, depuis plusieurs annees, un journal etrange ni chronologique ni thematique, qui forme comme le pendant de son oeuvre savante et continue de l'eclairer de reflexions vagabondes. "
