Paul et Virginie de Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre est un roman emblématique du préromantisme français. L'histoire se déroule sur l'île de France (aujourd'hui l'île Maurice) au XVIIIe siècle et narre l'amour pur et tragique de deux jeunes gens élevés comme frère et soeur. Paul et Virginie grandissent dans un cadre idyllique, entourés par la nature luxuriante de l'île tropicale. Élevés par leurs mères respectives, Marguerite et Mme de la Tour, ainsi que par deux esclaves dévoués, Domingue et Marie, ils vivent en harmonie avec leur environnement, loin des corruptions de la civilisation. Leur bonheur est brutalement interrompu lorsque la tante de Virginie décide d'envoyer la jeune fille en France pour parfaire son éducation. Cette séparation est déchirante pour les deux adolescents. Après deux ans d'absence, Virginie revient sur l'île, mais le navire qui la ramène, le Saint-Géran, fait naufrage près des côtes. Refusant d'ôter ses vêtements par pudeur, Virginie se noie sous les yeux impuissants de Paul. Dévasté par la perte de son amour, Paul dépérit et meurt peu après. Les mères et les fidèles serviteurs les suivent bientôt dans la tombe, marquant la fin tragique de leur petite communauté idéale. Bernardin de Saint-Pierre utilise cette histoire pour critiquer la société civilisée et exalter les vertus d'une vie simple en harmonie avec la nature. Le roman explore des thèmes tels que l'innocence, la pureté de l'amour, et l'opposition entre nature et civilisation.
