Il étudie à l'université de Bonn, puis à Leipzig, où il se passionne pour les oeuvres de Schopenhauer et les compositions de Wagner, deux influences majeures de sa pensée. À seulement 24 ans, il devient professeur de philologie classique à l'université de Bâle. Cependant, sa carrière académique est interrompue par des problèmes de santé chroniques. Philosophe allemand. Fils de pasteur, il se destine d'abord à la théologie, mais perd la foi. Il commence par enseigner la philologie classique à Bâle. En 1872, il publie La Naissance de la tragédie, dédiée à Wagner. Après avoir été mis en congé de l'université (1879) pour des raisons de santé, il connaîtra une dizaine d'années de vie errante et solitaire à travers l'Europe. Entre 1882 et 1888, il publie ses principaux ouvrages: Le Gai Savoir (1882); Ainsi parlait Zarathoustra (1883-1885); Par-delà le Bien et le Mal (1886); La Généalogie de la morale (1887); Le Crépuscule des idoles (1888). À partir de janvier 1889, il sombre progressivement dans la démence, il est alors interné et meurt à Weimar en 1900.
